An Organization Exists to Create Value

Summary: An organization is a community with a mission: to create value which individuals acting independently could not create. Value creation is the concern of everyone who participates with the organization -- but exactly what value looks like depends strongly on who is looking. "Value" takes the form of financial gain, satisfaction of important needs, making a significant difference in the lives of customers or clients, building value-creating capacity, and more. This diversity of viewpoint is strongly inherent in organizations and is ignored at real peril; most commonly, one view is allowed to co-opt all the others, or else compromise is sought. Leaders can better serve their organizations by leading an active conversation that results in a truly multi-perspective view of value creation.
